Canara · Ovidiu o-vi-diu
At the gates of Constanța, on the shore of Lake Siutghiol.
Back to the Dobruja pageAbout the town
Ovidiu, in brief
The city of Ovidiu stands at the gates of Constanța, on the western shore of Lake Siutghiol ("lake of milk" in Turkish). The old village of Canara was renamed in 1930 in honour of the Roman poet Ovidius, exiled at Tomis.
Local legend says that on the islet in Lake Siutghiol, right opposite the city, lay the poet's tomb. Ovidiu Island is today a leisure destination reached by boat from Mamaia.
Granted city status in 1989, Ovidiu developed as a natural extension of Constanța: stone quarries, agriculture, and in recent years new residential neighbourhoods for those who work in the neighbouring great city.
Do not confuse the town with Ovidiu Square in Constanța. Here you are on the west shore of Lake Siutghiol. In autumn the lake is for looking, not for the beach. The boat to the island follows the season the operator announces, not us.

The islet on Lake Siutghiol, linked to the legend of Ovidius's tomb.

Lake Siutghiol
The largest limans lake in the area, between Ovidiu and Mamaia.
"Lake of milk" in Turkish, Siutghiol is a freshwater mirror of 1,900 hectares separated from the sea only by the Mamaia strip. Underwater springs refresh its water, and the constant wind makes it heaven for water sports.
Mamaia's sand bar separates the lake from the sea.
Mamaia grows on the strip between lake and sea; the lake becomes a nautical base.
