History
In 1972, near Ovidiu, the walls of a sixth-century fort of the quadriburgium type came to light: four towers, two round and two rectangular, drawn outside the enclosure. The fortification guarded the aqueduct that carried water to Tomis, not a whole city.
The ruins stand close to the island that bears the name of Publius Ovidius Naso. You read the corners and the line of the wall; do not expect frescoes or covered halls. The dimensions are those of a small garrison fort, enough to walk around in an hour.
Combine the visit with a walk on the bank of Siutghiol. In summer the sun is hard on the stone; in winter the place is empty and windy. Do not climb unstable walls.
