Măcin, in brief
Măcin stands at the foot of the oldest mountains in Romania: the Măcin Mountains, formed in the Hercynian orogeny over 300 million years ago. Worn by weather to the height of bare granite hills, they remain a lesson in endurance without spectacle.
On the site of the city stood the Roman fortress of Arrubium, a cavalry camp on the Danube limes, and in the Middle Ages Măcin was a crossing point and market town on the Danube, disputed between Ottomans and the Romanian principalities.
Today the city is the gateway to Măcin Mountains National Park, with trails through steppe and sub-Mediterranean forests, among granite peaks such as Țuțuiatu (467 m), the highest in Dobrogea.

Măcin Mountains National Park
Trails through the Măcin Mountains, the oldest in Romania, with Țuțuiatu peak (467 m).
On 11,000 hectares, the park protects a mix unique in Europe: Pontic steppe, sub-Mediterranean forests and 300-million-year-old Hercynian rock formations. Marked trails climb towards Țuțuiatu, among Dobrogean tortoises and over 180 bird species.

Pricopan Ridge
Granite crest with spectacular shapes, such as the Dobrogean Sphinx.
The bare granite crest offers the most spectacular trail in Măcin: rocks sculpted by wind into strange shapes, including the famous Dobrogean Sphinx, and views as far as the Danube and the Brăila wetlands. The ridge trail takes about 4 hours.

Beneath the city of Măcin lie the ruins of the Roman camp of Arrubium, a cavalry garrison guarding the Danube since the 1st century. The name, of Celtic origin, recalls that the Galatians who came to Dobrogea two thousand years ago also stopped here.
