Black Sea, in full
The Black Sea defines Dobrogea more than anything else. The 244 km of Romanian coastline, almost entirely Dobrogean, have always been this land's window to the world: this is where Greek ships came 2,600 years ago, this is where Romania's grains and goods leave for all continents today.
The Black Sea is unlike any other. It was formed about 7,500 years ago when the rising Mediterranean breached the threshold of the Bosphorus and flooded the ancient freshwater lake, an event so dramatic that some researchers link it to the flood legends. Below a depth of about 200 meters, its waters are devoid of oxygen: the largest anoxic pool in the world, which preserves ancient wrecks almost intact.
The Greeks first called it Pontos Axeinos, "the inhospitable sea," then, after they knew its shores and people, Pontos Euxeinos, the "hospitable sea." We like to think that our apps follow the same path: at first unknown, then irreplaceable.

The birth of the sea
The Mediterranean breaks through the threshold of the Bosphorus and floods the old freshwater lake. Today's Black Sea is born, with its unique anoxic layer in the world.
Greek ships
Settlers from Milet and Heracleea found Histria, Tomis and Callatis. The Dobrogean coastline goes down in written history.
Pontus Euxinus
The Romans ruled the "hospitable sea"; Tomis becomes the metropolis of the west coast, and the Pontic fleet patrols the shores.
The Genoese
Genoese merchants restore the trade routes of the sea; their lighthouse in Constanța preserves their memory.
The modern port
Modern Romania builds Port of Constanța under Anghel Saligny; becomes the largest port on the Black Sea.

From Vama Veche to Sulina, the coast is both a commercial gateway, a holiday destination and a home for us.

Port of Constanța
The largest port on the Black Sea, Romania's maritime gateway since 1878.
Built under the leadership of Anghel Saligny and continuously expanded, today the port covers over 3,900 hectares and connects Central Europe to the whole world, being the main grain export gateway from the region.
Work begins on the modern port under Anghel Saligny.

The beaches of the coast
From Mamaia to Vama Veche, 244 km of fine sandy coastline and resorts for all tastes.
The Dobrogean coast means it all: family resorts like Eforie and Neptun, urban beaches at Constanța, wilderness at Vadu and Corbu, bohemia at Vama Veche. The fine sand and the smooth entrance to the sea are the hallmark of the entire coast.

Preserved wrecks
The anoxic waters preserve ancient wrecks almost intact, an underwater museum unique in the world.
Below 200 meters deep, the Black Sea has no oxygen, so neither do the organisms that eat wood. Recent expeditions have found dozens of shipwrecks over two millennia old, with masts and rudders intact, including the world's oldest intact shipwreck, a 2,400-year-old Greek ship.

2 Mai–Vama Veche Reserve - Vama Veche
Marine reserve with protected habitats, on the border with Bulgaria.
Romania's first marine reserve protects cliffs, mussel fields and rare species between 2 Mai and Vama Veche, including seahorses and dolphins that approach the shore in summer.
The area is declared a marine reserve.
