History
On the bank of the Danube–Black Sea Canal, near Straja, Pavel Bucur raised between 1974 and 1976 a concrete ensemble some 38 metres high. The pieces came from the Precast Combine in Medgidia. The official theme was the youth who had worked on the canal site.
After 1989 the monument remained in the field, without the old ritual. The concrete is cracked in places, the scale is still that of a works, not of a park. You see it from far off when you go along the bank road.
Stop five minutes, read the plaques if they are still there, go on along the canal. You do not need a guide to understand why it was built; you need context so as not to take it for just any abstract sculpture.
