History
Some five kilometres south of Gârliciu, on the Hisarlâc plateau, stand the ruins of Cius fortress. The Romans put a guard point here on the Lower Danube already in the first century, in the logic of the Flavian frontiers; the Antonine Itinerary mentions it on the bank route.
In 369 Valens rebuilt the line after the wars with the Goths. The place lived through further rebuildings toward the sixth century, then remained earth and stone. Modern excavations were also done in 1935; what you see today is low wall, ditches and a long view over the floodplain.
You reach it with an off-road car after rain. There is no ticket booth. Take water, avoid the ploughings and think of a military harbour below, at the river, not of a mountain fortress.
