History

Hârșova stands on a rock above the water, and Carsium occupied exactly this headland. The Romans fortified a Getic hearth; the Tabula Peutingeriana and the Itinerarium Antonini note it as a frontier station. The place was held, with interruptions, for some 1,700 years.

On the bank you can still see walls and the line of the enclosure. Troops such as Gallorum Flaviana or Iovia Scythica were stationed here. Today's town grew over part of the site, so the ruins are cut by streets.

Go into the town museum as well: there you understand what is missing on the ground. From the promenade you see the river islands and the ford.
