History
On Callatis Street no. 1, close to the sea, the Armenians of Constanța keep the church of “Saint Mary”. The community is attested in Dobrogea from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; the present building dates from 1880-1881, after an older presence that, in local tradition, goes back toward 1740.
After 1948 the house was taken out of ordinary use; services resumed after 1990. The façade is sober, the interior keeps Armenian inscriptions and an iconostasis that does not resemble the Romanian Orthodox one nearby, though both are Eastern.
Enter in silence, especially if you catch a Sunday service. It is a piece of the circle of churches on the peninsula: Catholic, Greek, Romanian Orthodox, Armenian, a few minutes' walk apart.
