Cerna, centre of the Megleno-Romanians

Cerna commune in Tulcea county is today the world centre of the Megleno-Romanians. Bilingual page: Romanian and Megleno-Romanian. Megleno-Romanian is not a site-wide language — it is one village's treasure.

Cerna, județlu Tulcea, e astăzi centrul mondial a megleno-românilor. Aistă pagină e bilingvă: română și megleno-română. Nu facem un catalog întreg în megleno-română; lăsăm graiul aici, acasă.

Where they come from

Megleno-Romanians originate from the Meglen region, today on the border between Greece and North Macedonia. In 1925–1926 they were settled in Dobrogea; after 1940 they regrouped in Cerna.

What is kept

The dialect, weddings, carols, and dishes from Meglen are still passed down in families. It is one of the four historical Romanian languages, alongside Daco-Romanian, Aromanian, and Istro-Romanian.

How to visit

Cerna is a living commune, not a museum. Ask before photographing people or services. We don't publish a festival schedule unless it is announced.
