History
Prefect Remus Opreanu wanted, immediately after 1878, a hotel of measure in a city that had just entered Romania. Between 1879 and 1882 Alexandru Orăscu designed Hotel Carol I: the first large inn, with European pretensions, on the Black Sea.
Here Carol I and Ion C. Brătianu stayed when they came to see the new Dobrogea. The cost seemed great for that time, but the building held for decades, with rebuilds in the 1920s, until the city grew over it.
Look for the place in the old fabric, not a tower with neon. It is worth setting beside the cathedral of the same Orăscu, to see how Constanța after the Union looked: hotel, church, prefecture, harbour.
