History
Fântâna Mare, Bașpînar in Turkish, is a village in Independența commune lived in almost only by ethnic Turks. The mosque has held the community together for generations; traces of Muslim habitation in the area come from the time of the Ottoman Empire, with older layers of road and of well, hence the name.
The place of worship was rehabilitated in 2000 and 2007, with support that also came from Turkey. It is a cared-for building, in use, not an album ruin. If you arrive on Saturday, you may catch people at prayer: wait, then ask leave. The village is worth a walk on the lanes, not only a photograph at the gate, then you return toward Murfatlar or toward Cobadin.
