History
At Dumbrăveni, in the south of Constanța County, the limestone shelters an ensemble of little churches and cells cut into the rock. Archaeologists date them, broadly, to the 9th–10th centuries: the same Dobruja monastic wave that left traces at Murfatlar-Basarabi and in Canaraua Fetii.
It is not a site with a ticket office and paths. You arrive on a country road, then on foot, over uneven ground. Going into unstable grottos is not a good idea: the chalk and limestone flake, and the monument is fragile. Look from the threshold, photograph from a distance, pick nothing up from the ground.
Dumbrăveni is worth pairing with Canaraua Fetii and the monastery at Lipnița, on a one-day tour through southern Dobruja. Spring and autumn are the gentlest; in summer the sun beats without shade.
