History

The fortress stands some 600 metres southwest of the village of Adamclisi and about 1,500 metres from the monument on the hill, on the Urluia valley. Trajan settled families of veterans here after the Dacian wars. What emerged was the most extensive Roman civilian settlement in southern Dobrogea, with streets, blocks of houses and an enclosure wall.

The rise is lower than the hills around it, and so naturally defended. On the ground you follow the line of the wall, the gates and the traces of public buildings. It is not a film reconstruction, but the plan can be read if you look at a sketch beforehand.

Leave a whole morning: monument, museum, then fortress. Shoes for dry grass, a hat, water. In winter you are almost alone; in August the sun is hard on the stone.
