History
In 1887 the Italian Ettore Ferrari cast in bronze Publius Ovidius Naso, the poet sent to Tomis. The figure is about 2.60 m: head bent, a volume in the hand, weight on one elbow. On the plinth stand verses from the Tristia, Book III, where he complains of the Pontic shore.
The statue was moved, restored and brought back to Ovidiu Square after wars and pavement rebuilds - including in the years 1920-1925 and after 1940. Today it is the point from which almost any turn through the historic peninsula starts: the mosque, the museum and the harbour are two or three minutes away.
Evening is crowded, morning you catch the light on the bronze. Do not climb the plinth; photograph from square level, so the buildings around come in as well.
