History
Some nine kilometres downstream from Ostrov, the Danube holds an island you reach only with the boats of locals. Păcuiul lui Soare keeps the walls of a Byzantine fortification linked to the campaigns of John Tzimiskes, in the years 969-976, on the line of the Lower Danube.
Modern excavations began in 1956. You see quay stones, fragments of wall and a floodplain landscape that changes with the water level. It is not a museum with hours; it is an outing on the water, an arrangement with a fisherman and shoes that will take mud.
Ask at Ostrov who is crossing that day. Take a life jacket, water and respect camping bans if they are posted. Back on the bank, compare what you saw with a map of the Byzantine frontier: the island takes on another sense.
