History
On the right bank of the Danube, near the village of Ostrov, the site officially called Ostrov-Ferma 4 holds the traces of Durostorum: a civilian settlement, necropolises, walls from the Roman period, the late Roman period and the early Middle Ages. It is at km 132.100 on the Bucharest-Călărași-Constanța axis, some 150 m south of the Ostroi arm, opposite Silistra.
Legio XI Claudia stood here. The names of Marcus Aurelius and of Justinian appear in the history of the place; later, the settlement across the water was called Drastar. The ruins on the Romanian bank are hard to read without a guide: take a map from the museum or the town hall and do not walk on the walls.
Pair the stop with a crossing to Silistra, if you have papers, or with Tropaeum Traiani, on the way back. In summer it is heat on the field; in spring the relief shows better.
