History
Cocoșului Hill, above Niculițel, took its name from a wild cock that the monks say they once heard together with the semantron. The hermits' skete is mentioned from 1679; today's monastery was settled in 1833 by Visarion, Gherontie and Isaia, come from Neamț and from Athos, with a modest wooden chapel.
The great church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was raised toward 1884; the belfry, the cells and the painting - with Dobrescu and other masters - came through to 1913. The years 1947 and 1959 emptied the community, as throughout the country. Today it is open again.
The road climbs from Niculițel; leave the car in the park and walk the last metres. From the hill you see the plain toward the Danube. Pair it with the basilica at Niculițel and with Saon, if you have a whole day.
