History
In 1575, Esmahan Sultan - daughter of Selim II and wife of the grand vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha - funded a mosque in Mangalia. It is the oldest surviving Muslim place of worship in Romania. Beside it stands an Ottoman cemetery with stones several centuries old.
The minaret is short, the walls of local stone, the courtyard fountain can still be seen. The interior is a single hall, without excessive decoration.
It is close to the shore, in a quiet neighbourhood, not on the hotel seafront. Go in the morning; in summer the cemetery is shady and the cool holds.
