History
If you want to understand where Mangalia began, start in the town centre, at the museum opened in 1959. The collection is built around Callatis: the colony of Dorians who came from Heraclea Pontica in the sixth century BC, then a Hellenistic and Roman settlement on the southern shore of Dobrogea.
In the cases you find pottery, inscriptions, jewellery, tools and funerary pieces taken from the fortress, from the necropolises and from the waters in front of the harbour. It is worth reading the labels: many objects have a clear find context; they are not only “beautiful”, they show how people lived, traded and buried their dead here.
Reserve a quiet hour, not a ten-minute dash. After the visit, step straight into today's town and you will more easily recognise where the ancient shore was, where the walls stood and why Mangalia is not only a summer resort.
