History
After the Crimean War (1853–1856), Sultan Abdul-Medjid ordered a new town for the Tatars who had come from Crimea. Medgidia was laid out on a plan, and the great mosque was built in the 1860s, with the support of Said Pasha. It is a Friday place of worship, not a museum piece.
The plan is square, with a minaret and a courtyard. The walls are thick, of stone and brick. Restorations in recent decades have kept the roof and the plaster.
It is next to the central square. Go in outside prayer hours, with shoulders covered. In the same town you can also go to the Lucian Grigorescu Museum.
