Residential Quarter of the 5th–6th centuries AD

History

In the northeast of the fortress, on the site of a necropolis used from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, the people of Tomis laid out a residential quarter in the 5th–6th centuries. The change is clear: from graves to houses, as the population grew and the wall could no longer hold the whole old city.

Excavations have brought out house plans, courtyards and, in some spots, pieces that entered public discussion (including analogies with the “Lupa” and other Roman motifs). For the visitor, the ground looks like a network of foundations, not a museum with display cases.

Go with a guide or a site plan; otherwise you risk walking past walls without knowing you are standing on former graves.
