History

Between 1935 and 1937 the Catholic community of Constanța raised, on the site of an old chapel, the church dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The design follows a sober Romanesque, with accents from northern Italy: exposed brick outside and in, clear volumes, without heavy stucco.

Inside, light falls on wide naves and on the organ that is heard at the larger services. It is worth going in on a weekday as well, when it is quiet, to see the masonry close up and to understand why the building looks different from the Orthodox churches around it.

You find it in the peninsula, a walk from the Casino and from the other houses of worship in the confessional “octagon”. If you catch a service, remember that it is an active place of worship, not only a street photograph.
