The Lipovan winter fast
Old Rite Christians keep long fasts, counted on the Julian calendar. That changes the table at home. It is not a “Lipovan winter menu” for guests. We do not publish a list of restaurants.
What the fast is
A rule of the house and of the church. The Christmas fast and the Easter fast are the long ones of winter and spring. The dates move with Julian Easter. We do not copy them here as a tourist calendar.
What it means for a guest
In a Lipovan village, a meal announced in public — a hram, a feast — belongs to the community. If a place writes on the door that it is keeping the fast, that is its text. If it does not, do not ask “have you got fasting borscht?” as if it were an attraction.
What it is not
It is nobody’s diet. It is not a reason to photograph the plate. Fish borscht, when it is served, is home food, not a festival. The calendar stays at Julian vs Gregorian.
