History
Scarlat Lambrino came upon the “Great Gate” in 1933; in 1987, further works brought it back to light. It is the main mouth of the fortress from the time when the Empire, at the end of the 3rd century and the start of the 4th, was strengthening its frontier in Scythia Minor.
The walls are thick, the threshold is wide, and the visit is short: you grasp at once that carts and patrols came through here, not tourists. Today it sits in the fabric of the city, so you catch it on foot, among other enclosure ruins.
