History
In Târgușor, a stone obelisk remembers the dead of 1916-1918. It is not a capital-city monument: it is a Dobrogea commune that lived the retreat after Turtucaia, when Constantin Teodorescu's 9th Infantry Division was crushed, in September 1916, by Mackensen's offensive.
From here the Romanian army's road went south, by Topraisar and beyond, with heavy losses. The cross or obelisk in the village gathers local names, not the whole map of the campaign; to understand the stones, you also need the Danube at Silistra, and the villages between Constanța and Cernavodă.
Stop the car, read the plaques, do not treat the place as a selfie backdrop. If you are doing the 1916 front route, Târgușor is a marker, not the final destination.
