Amphitheatre at Pietrele Scrise

History

Not far from the Cave of Saint John Cassian, the limestone forms a natural semicircle, like a cavea. Locals call it an amphitheatre; it has no stages, no tickets, only rock steps and a strange acoustic if you speak loudly. Nearby stand two Greek inscriptions, two millennia old, hence “Pietrele Scrise”.

The climb is short, but on bare stone. Pair the place with the monastery on Casienilor Hill, on the same outing from Târgușor. Spring is the cleanest; in summer bring a hat. Do not scratch the rock and do not wet the inscriptions with bottle water to make them come out better in a photograph.
