History

Babadag, from Turkish Baba Dağı - Father's Mountain - takes its name from Sari Saltuk Baba, the dervish who arrived around 1300. The town is attested from the thirteenth century. The Muslim cemetery, on a slope above the settlement, holds stones from the sixteenth century to the twentieth: a vertical stele, an inscription, sometimes a turban carved on the end.

Some graves hold families of scholars and of people of standing in the Ottoman market town. Do not go in with food, do not sit on the slabs. From here you go down toward the Ali-Gazi Pasha Mosque and the fountain in the courtyard, if you want the same thread in an hour's walk. Babadag is in Tulcea, on the road toward the northern coast, not a hard detour from Constanța.
