History

About 54 kilometres from Constanța, above Pantelimonul de Sus, the walls of Ulmetum stand on a plateau cut by ravines. The Romans fortified the place in the 4th–6th centuries, on an older settlement; the sources mention it as Ulmeto.

Grigore Tocilescu noted the ruins at the end of the 19th century. Vasile Pârvan excavated systematically between 1911 and 1914. After 2004 research resumed: the enclosure, the gates and a basilica were clarified.

The road from the village is dirt. Do not expect a café at the gate. Bring water and go down carefully on the crumbling slopes.
