History
At Albești, between Callatis and Dionysopolis, archaeologists have opened a fortified settlement lived in mainly in the fourth and third centuries BC. The first enclosure, around the middle of the fourth century, belongs to the moment when Callatis was organising its agricultural and guard hinterland.
The second wall seems linked to Macedonian pressure at the end of the same century. Later come rebuildings and a third defensive logic; the site is not a storybook fortress with whole towers, but a field with traces of wall, dwellings and excavation material.
Go expecting a rural site, not a reconstructed city. Take water, read a plan beforehand (the area is on the order of thousands of square metres) and tie the visit to Mangalia, not to a whole day only for Albești.
