History
In May 1864 Alexandru Ioan Cuza slept at the Hotel Danubiu, on the Giurgiu–Cernavodă–Constanța–Constantinople road. The hotel, from around 1850, became the Metropol, with doors from Ovidiu and from Elena, and held salons where, in the 1880s–1890s, people read and sang — including people from Macedonski’s circle and from “Literatorul”.
On the ruins of the Metropol, Albert Theiler raised in 1926 the house that bears his name. Between 1854 and 1920 the address was an inn, a stage and a stopping place; after 1913–1916 the war emptied the rooms. Theiler closed a century of hotel into a dwelling.
Look for the corner of Ovidiu and Elena and read the two ages: Cuza’s inn and the house of 1926. It is not an Eminescu museum; it is a layer of late Ottoman and Romanian city at once.
