The Cadrilater
The Cadrilater is the Romanian name for southern Dobrogea, now in Bulgaria: 1913–1940, a layer of memory, schools, cemeteries, maps. A page of context, not of political itinerary and not of claim. Today’s border is at Vama Veche.
What it was
After 1913, Romania administered a territory with Silistra, Dobric, Balcic. In 1940 the frontier moved. People moved with it, in both directions. Museums and archives hold the papers; we do not hold a speech.
What remains here
Family stories in Constanța and Tulcea, names, cemeteries, an idea of a royal coast that continued toward Balcic. The castle is on the other side. The Dobrogea in Bulgaria guide is for anyone who crosses legally, as a tourist.
How we speak
No map of “it should be”. No border jokes over a glass, on the quay. Context, source, respect for those who live there today.
On the ground, in Romania
Vama Veche is an end, not a wound to display. 2 Mai, Mangalia, Callatis hold our southern shore. They are enough.
