Memory 1878 / 1916 / 1944
1878, 1916, 1944: three moments that redrew Dobrogea. We read the monuments; we do not rewrite them politically. No slogan, no “camp”. The sources sit in museums, archives and on plaques.
1878
Dobrogea returns to Romania. Administration, road, railway, settlers of several languages arrive. The bridge at Cernavodă is the visible consequence. The Independence monuments in Tulcea and in other squares hold this layer.
1916
The war goes hard through Dobrogea: front, refuge, occupation. War cemeteries and commemorative plaques are places of remembrance, not of picnic.
1944
The front turns back. The Jews of the region have a chapter that does not fit in one sentence — the Jewish heritage guide takes it further. The monuments often stand two steps away; we read them without wiping them from the frame.
