Season
Zăpada pe litoral
The sea keeps the coast milder in winter than the plateau and Măcin. Snow on the shore is rare and usually brief. When it settles, the promenade is ice, not a postcard view.
Cât de rară e
Romania’s National Meteorological Administration, for Constanța station, gives an average of about 15 days with snow cover per year in 1961–2022 and about 11 days per year in 2013–2022. Some years had almost none: none in 1990, one day in 2020. In 1987 there were 44 days. The average does not say which day it snows at Mamaia. It says a whole white winter on the breakwater is not the usual year.
De ce malul îngheață altfel decât stepa
Sea humidity and wind make snow on stone melt and refreeze. Railing, steps, and tiles hold ice even when snow in town has gone. On plateau and Măcin, the same episode lasts longer on dirt roads and granite. Do not go down steps “just to the wave” or lean on the railing for a photo.
Același polei, numit pe loc
On the promenade: ice on the railing. On steps, wherever wet or frozen: wet step. At the fortress: ice at the fortress. Wind that dries the steppe and cuts the promenade is crivăț.
