Prince Barbu Știrbey Villa, Mamaia
The beach season has closed (after 15 September). On the coast it is autumn/cold: promenade, museums, towns. Not bathing weather. Lifeguard, showers and sunbeds — only in the bathing season (1 June–15 September).
History
In 1930, when Mamaia was already gathering people from Bucharest, the villa of Barbu Știrbey was finished, close to the Royal Pavilion and Queen Marie's house. It is a summer residence of the aristocracy, with a quiet volume, not a glass villa of today.
Știrbey (1872-1946) ran the Crown Domains, held the opposition in hard moments and was in the political play that led, in 1944, to the Moscow armistice, after contacts with the Allies and a stay in Cairo. The house by the sea is the domestic side of that biography.
You look for it on the strip of villas among the hotels, not on the main promenade. It can be seen from the street; do not count on an interior visit. Pair the stop with the other royal houses in Mamaia, to understand how the resort looked before 1946.
