History

At Cernavodă, Anghel Saligny’s bridge — inaugurated by Carol I in 1895 — crosses the Danube on steel girders. At the ends stand the dorobanți: four bronze soldiers, in 1877 uniforms, rifles at rest.

In its day it was among the longest bridges in Europe. The train still uses it; a new deck has been added beside it. You look from the bank; you do not climb onto the track. The statues are photographed from below, with the girder behind them.
