History
On Muratan Hill, near Pecineaga, a stone cross marks the field grave of more than 400 German soldiers fallen in October 1916, in the fighting at Topraisar-Muratan. It was raised by the army of August von Mackensen, during the Central Powers' offensive in Dobrogea.
Today it is in a field, without paths, without a toilet, without a new panel. The stone has weathered; in 1991 there were further markings, but the place has remained at the mercy of weather and grazing.
Go with the respect of a cemetery, not of a viewpoint. Take coordinates, stubble-worthy shoes and a map of the 1916 front. The cross does not “tell a story”; it is a sign of hurried burial, left on a hill.
