History

In 1962, during extension works at the “Mihai Eminescu” National College on Boulevard Ferdinand no. 30, the rooms of a basilica crypt from the fifth and sixth centuries came to light. We were already in Scythia Minor, with Tomis as an episcopal seat, not in the classical Roman city of the second century.

The space is below the level of the school courtyard: stone walls, niches, traces of funerary arrangement. Some researchers link it to the Christian hierarchy of Tomis; what is certain is that it is not an ordinary cellar, but a construction thought for important dead.

The visit depends on access to the college grounds, not on a museum ticket at the corner. Call ahead or ask at the History Museum; do not force the gate in the break between classes.
