History
On Traian Street, in the old centre, the building raised between 1906 and 1908 was thought as a Girls’ Secondary School — one of the few modern schools of this kind in Dobrogea after 1878. After the First World War it kept its educational destination, and in 1931 it for a time bore the name of Princess Domnița Ileana.
The place has an older layer: here were the Kaymakamlık and then the Prefecture, and excavations brought to light traces from the fourth century, including ones tied to the Tomitan bishopric. In 1948 the school was reorganized; the name “Mihai Eminescu” settled on the frontage in the following decades, with a visible modernization around 1970.
It is a category A monument, so you look at the façade and the stair from the street even if you have no business with the lessons. If it is a school day, respect the timetable: the interior is a school, not a place with a ticket office.
