History

In front of the former Hotel București in Mamaia, Spiru Sabiescu placed in 1970 a stone bird worked a year earlier. No plaque, no signature. For decades people passed toward the beach without knowing who had cut it. Sabiescu came from the camps at Măgura, where one worked directly in a block of limestone.

Today you recognise it if you look up, not if you look for a sign. It is on the seafront, opposite the hotel, and photographs well in the morning, with the sea behind. If you like public works of the 1960s-1970s, keep it together with “Music of the Sea” at Aurora, on a walk.
