Early Christian Basilica

History

At Gate 1 of the port stand the remains of a 5th-century basilica, still in use in the 6th. It is an early Christian hall, raised when Tomis, a provincial capital in Scythia Minor, was shifting its centre of gravity from the old temples toward the bishopric.

The plan is elongated, with a nave and annexes; the walls are readable at foundation level. The vestiges sit close to the shoreline route, so you catch them if you go down toward the port, not if you stay only in the Archaeological Park.

A panel and five minutes of attention are enough. If you have already seen the amphitheatre under the hotel, you have a picture of how the city changed in those same centuries.
