Maritime delta, in full
The ends of the Danube are extreme places: Sulina with the old lighthouse, Sfântu Gheorghe where the branch flows directly into the sea, Chilia at the northern border. Here the water is salty, the wind blows from the sea, and the distances are measured in boat hours.
The maritime delta is less accessible, but offers landscapes that you cannot find anywhere else: beach at the mouth of the river, fishermen, lighthouses and wide sky. Sulina was, for decades, a cosmopolitan city of the European Commission of the Danube.
The Sfântu Gheorghe arm is the most natural of the three: unnavigable for large ships, it preserves the wildest landscape of the Delta at its outflow. The village of the same name hosts an annual film festival anchored between the water and the sea.
Chilia Veche, on the northern arm, is the closest village to the border with Ukraine. The landscape is similar, but less touristic: fishing, endless reeds and silence.

Danube Commission
Sulina becomes the seat of the European Commission of the Danube, a cosmopolitan port at the end of the river.
Sulina canalization
The arm Sulina is ground and deepened; becomes the only maritime waterway through the Delta.
Lighthouse Sulina
The commission raises the beacon that guides the ships to the mouth of the arm.
Danube-Mare Canal
The shortcut to Constanța is opened, near Cernavodă; Sulina remains the alternate sea gateway.
Festival Sfântu Gheorghe
The village at the mouth of the southern arm becomes the site of a film festival and slow tourism.

Sulina - the old lighthouse
Lighthouse from 1870, symbol of the city at the end of the Danube.
The nearly 60-foot white tower remained on land as the delta rose eastward; today it is more than 2 km from the current shoreline. The lighthouse museum houses Jean Bart and George Georgescu memorial rooms. Passenger ships Tulcea-Sulina dock at the river port.

Beach Sulina
The Danube into the Black Sea - wild beach at the mouth of the river.
At the end of the Sulina arm, the Danube water meets the sea: wide sandy beach, cold water at the confluence and landscape at the end of the world. It is reached by boat or ferry from Tulcea, then on foot or by car through the village.
The beach becomes a destination for Sulina residents and tourists.

Sfântu Gheorghe
Village at the mouth of the southern arm, film festival and landscape between the water and the sea.
The Sfântu Gheorghe arm is the most natural of the Delta: unnavigable for large ships, with direct discharge into the sea. The fishing village hosts the Pelicam Festival and offers accommodation with locals, fresh fish and the beach a few kilometers away on the beam.
