Abdul Medgid mosque and Carol I
Two houses of worship, two centuries, two communities. Abdul Medgid mosque in Medgidia and Carol I Mosque (Hünkâr) in Constanța. You compare them on paper. You do not “do” both in a rush, as a circuit.
Abdul Medgid, Medgidia
Raised in the mid-nineteenth century, with the settling of Mecidiye for Crimean Tatars. The name holds Sultan Abdülmecid. It is a community house of worship, in the town. The 90-minute walk includes it, from the street.
Carol I, Constanța
Carol I Mosque, called Hünkâr, 1910–1913, a foundation of the king for the Muslim community of the port. The minaret is visible from the peninsula. It is a house of worship, not a viewpoint tower. The name Hünkâr is not translated: what does not get translated.
For a class
Three columns: founder, year, who prays there today. The etiquette is the same: shoes, voice, no photos of prayer. Two frames, not a tour: street and courtyard. Do not timetable both plus MINAC in the same morning.
