Letea Forest - the magic of wilderness between the Danube and the sea

History

On the sandbar between the arms, Letea became a reserve in 1938, when Hașmacul Mare was first protected. Since then the area has grown to more than 5,200 hectares, of which some 2,825 stand under a strict regime, without cuttings and without new roads.

The forest stands on dunes. Oaks and ashes cling to the sand, and the Periploca liana - rare in Europe - climbs the trunks. Among the trees walk horses without owners, descendants of abandoned herds; estimates vary, but you see them for sure if you stay still and do not chase them.

Entry is from the village of Letea, as a rule with a local guide and a cart. Do not leave the path: the strictly protected zone is not for picnics. Spring and autumn are better than torrid August, when the sand burns and the mosquitoes keep long hours.
