History
In 1894, at Crișan, an obelisk was raised to mark the completion of the works on the Sulina branch, those that made the Maritime Danube navigable. Carol I came to the inauguration. On the stone stands a French inscription that begins with “Cette”, a sign that the monument spoke the language of the European Commission of the Danube, not that of a fishing village.
It is on the bank, at eye level, not on a hill. You stop the steamer or the boat, get off for five minutes, read the text and go on toward Mila 23 or Sulina. In the years 1980-1989 the stone was cleaned and reset; it has stayed in the same place. You do not need a guide: take a photograph of the inscription, so you can read it in the boat on the way back.
