History
Near Mahmudia, the castrum named in the Antonine Itinerary and on the Tabula Peutingeriana held a point on the lower Danube branch from the second and third centuries onward. The name Salsovia appears in those station lists; on the ground the walls read as uneven ground, on a slope toward the water.
Settlement continued, with interruptions, into the fourth and ninth centuries. The remains at Tudorka belong to the same bank. Do not expect a restored amphitheatre: take a sketch, ask in the village and walk the path, not the wall. Mahmudia is a good base — food, a boat toward the Delta — and the fortress is an hour's loop, not the day's destination.
