History
Settlers from Miletus founded Histria on the shore of the Razim-Sinoe lagoon, in the second half of the 7th century BC. Eusebius of Caesarea and Skymnos place it around 657. It remains the oldest urban settlement on the territory of today's Romania.
The ruins stand next to the commune of Istria. On the ground you can make out Greek, Roman and Byzantine walls, streets, baths and basilicas. Systematic research began in 1914.
Bring water and a hat: it is open field, lagoon wind, little shade. The museum at the gate explains what you see outside - pottery, inscriptions, coins - and the combined ticket is worth it.
