History
People in Tulcea call it the “Clock Church” or the “Bulgarian Church”. The Bulgarian community replaced in 1857 a wooden church that the floods in the New Market area kept damaging. The nave is long, and the belfry, with Gothic accents, rose with the new wall.
Beside it functioned the gymnasium and the Bulgarian National School. Works were added in 1859, 1862, 1881-1882; restorations closer to us, in 1992 and 2007, have kept the dome and the clock in function.
Go in for the iconostasis and for the afternoon silence, then step out into the market to see how the tower stands over the roofs. It is still a place of worship, not only postcard décor.
