History

A kilometre and a half to two from the edge of Murighiol, the gravel road leaves you beside the walls of Halmyris fortress. The monastery by the ruins, raised around 2000-2001, is dedicated to the holy martyrs Epictetus and Astion, whose remains were identified in the ancient necropolis.

Commemorations are also kept for Montanus and Maxima. The visit ties naturally to the archaeological site: a Roman fortress at the mouths of the Danube, then a twenty-first-century Christian house, on the same bank.

Wear dusty shoes and combine the two stops in the same morning, before you leave toward Dunavăț or into the canals. In summer the sun on the plateau is hard; in winter the wind cuts more than in the village.
