History
Stavru Dumitriu bought the land in 1912, when the lot was still at the edge of the city. Only in 1920, after the plans of the architect Edgar de Goue, did the Grand Hotel open: dozens of rooms (around 36 at the start), an Art Nouveau façade, the pretension of a European hotel in a Constanța that wanted to be a resort, not just a port.
Later, the Dumitriu family (including Dumitru) kept the business close to car dealerships — Ford was spoken of as well — and to commercial ties with 1930s Czechoslovakia. The building remained a boulevard landmark, even when it was no longer “grand” in the sense of the poster.
Stop at the façade and the gate. If it is a hotel or offices, do not go into service halls; a photograph from the pavement is enough.
