History
The building of the former Ottoman gendarmerie keeps the sober plan of a public-order seat from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries: regular windows, a thick wall, an inner courtyard. Here stayed the gendarmes who controlled roads, markets and taxes, not a parade barracks.
After the Turkish administration withdrew, the building passed through civilian uses, but the volume remains recognizable in the old fabric. For anyone walking late Ottoman Dobrogea, it is a landmark of office and watch, not of worship or of a palace.
Look at it from the street, compare it with the mosques and inns of the same quarter, and do not expect a museum open daily. It is worth photographing in morning light, when the shadows bring out the rhythm of the windows.
